Walk-Up revenue is generated by selling metered
access to the Internet. Customers pay with either cash or credit
card and receive a specific amount of time on the terminal in exchange for their payment. They may then use this time to surf
the internet, use different online
services like sending instant messages,
and send VideoMail or PictureMail. A warning occurs when time
is close to running out and the customer may
then insert further
payment to extend their session or let time expire. The kiosk
owner may set their rate or use the default rate of 25 cents/minute.
Credit cards are processed through the software so there is no
need to set up a merchant account.

Until recently, walk-up revenue
was the only source of revenue for kiosk operators. Many companies
and individuals built large networks of terminals with only
this type of revenue.
